i know that in my 1989 735i it is from underneath it is quite fiddly and u really need someone in the driver seat to catch when it is pushed thru at the gear handle

80W90 gear oil.
Use 90w gear oil. you can buy it from Wal-Mart or any auto place!
standard 80/90 if its winter you can use synthetic also still 80/90
They can be a tenth off.
