Armadillos are native to the Americas, particularly Central and South America. There are around twenty different species of Armadillo, and they range from Paraguay, where they are concentrated most heavily, up to southern and western USA. Because there are few natural predators of this armored creature, their population in the US is gradually spreading further north, even as far as Indiana and Illinois.
Armadillos dig burrows in the ground, preferably in soft, moist soil near creeks and streams. These burrows are commonly surrounded by overgrown brush or "thicket".
