I think that the main theme is concerning the Devil and how people are so obsessed with material items, that they let their guard down and let the Devil take over.
I learned that Paul was so concerned with making his mother happy and getting her attention by reaching his goal (attaining luck), that he let his guard down, letting the Devil get into his body.
The climax is when Paul's mother comes home to find him furiously rocking back and forth on the rocking horse yelling the name of the horse he believes will win the race and then falls off injuring himself ultimately fatally.
The point of view is of a third person narrator who sees just what the reader sees.
