The criminal justice system is important because it maintains public order and upholds personal freedoms. If it did not uphold public order, people could commit crimes without consequences. If it did not uphold personal freedoms then people would be afraid that anything they own could be searched or taken from them.

Just as we as a society try to control deviance through different methods (social control), if the deviance is deemed harmful to society as a whole (by our legislature), then how we deal with deviance must be more formal as well. When operated as designed, the Criminal Justice System is how we as a society enforce our laws and determine what is to be done with law-breakers, as well as carrying out the sanctions. Without the criminal justice system, society would be chaotic.
