Lots of Sheep!!!

Rugged, beautiful, wet

The south is rather industrialised - the main population areas being Cardiff (the capital), Newport, and Swansea. These three cities have the bulk of the population. All three are historic cities - Cardiff has a wonderful city centre and sports 2 cathedrals - one Roman Catholic and the other the Church in Wales. Newport has a Church in Wales cathedral named after a local saint 'Woolos' (or in Welsh 'Gwynlliw'), and a transporter bridge that conveys cars and people over the river on a suspended platform - one of only around 6 or 7 left in the world. The Welsh one is the largest of those left.

The west of Wales is very rural, as is the north. Sheepfarming is the most common form of agriculture, and as a meat, Welsh lamb is world renowned. The centre of Wales is mountainous, wild and very beautiful. The Welsh mountains are among the most beautiful in Europe. The main areas are the Black Mountains, the Brecon Beacons and the Snowdonia National Park (which boasts Wales and England's highest peak Mount Snowdon - in Welsh yr Wyddfa).

For its size Wales has more medieval castles than anywhere else in the world, as over its history it was invaded many times and so these castles sprang up for defence an to control the locals. Castles range from Caerfilly - a huge castle in the centre of the town (with a leaning tower) through to the stunning Caernavon and Harlech castles in the North, and Cardiff and Chepstow (Wales' oldest castle) in the South. In size some are no more than fortified houses but they appear all over Wales. Most are now ruined, but some have been restored to their former glory.

Weather is very changeable with winters not being particularly cold as the Gulf Stream flows right past the west coast. This means that weather can also be wet and windy - even in summer, although on warm sunny days it is like heaven on earth.

The people are friendly, welcoming and accommodating. All speak English but many thousands - especially in the west and North, speak Welsh as a first language - an ancient language of the Celts whose relatives include French Breton, Manx, Cornish, Scots and Irish Gaelic. Road signs and other signs in Wales are always written in both languages.

Wales was at one time, with northern England and parts of Scotland, the coalmining capital of Europe, but as its coal became more difficult to extract and the mines became less than competitive, they have now all gone - to be replaced with modern industries like electronic component and microchip manufacture. Wales is also known as the Land of Song - where choirs (especially male voice choirs) are still a popular pastime and many choirs compete in an international festival of music and poetry there called an Eisteddfod (the 'Sitting'). Wales' national sport is Rugby Union, and is almost a religion to the Welsh rather than a pastime. The Welsh team are playing well at the moment winning the Grand Slam and Six nations Championship in 2008, and doing very well in the World Cup. They are currently well within the top 10 teams in the world.

Religion in Wales is almost exclusively Protestant although there are a few Roman Catholics. Most churches are ether the Church in Wales, or non-conformists like Baptists, Congregationalists and Methodists.

Another answerI live in the south of Wales, where it is slightly more industrialized than the rest of the country.

Weather wise Wales is wet, with cold winters, but then again there the only winters i know. In the summer it can vary between temperatures of up to 30 degrees and temperetures of 10 degrees. It rains all year round, sometimes more so in summer and winter.

Wales is the oldest and possibly most historic country in the UK. It has many Celtic roots and traditions. For example the eisteddford is a huge celebration which music is played. St Davids day, on AMrch the first is much celebrated in schools.

Wales is mountainous and the primary form of agriculture is sheep farming. Wales is often forgotten by America and omungst England and Wales there is much friction.
