The people were called the Mexica. There was a prophecy that foretold that when they finally reached the land they should settle in, there would be an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its mouth. They supposedly encountered this sign after years of wandering and so settled there.

What is located where the Aztec capital once was?

According to Aztec legend, the Aztecs are said to have come from a place called Aztlan which was a place that some say was probably in the northern portion of Mexico. The Aztecs wandered for years looking for a place to reside. They finally settled in the central portion of Mexico in about 1,200 AD. After fighting with the current inhabitants of the land, the Aztecs were forced to live in the swamps. Then a vision came that told them to settle on a land where they say an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its mouth. They finally settled on a small island in the center of Lake Texcoco. This was a perfect site as it was very difficult to invade and food was plentiful. On this island the Aztecs built the capital city of Tenochtitlan. In less than 200 years, the Aztecs had created one of the largest and most advanced civilizations of the Americas. So all in all, they lived on a small island on the center of Lake Texacoco.
