They were among many colonies, by many different nations (including Britain,Spain,France, and Portugul) to be founded in the "New Land" of North America. They were founded because the people of Europee were running out of supplies and Natural Resources there and need more land in order to fuel their scientific and industrial revolutions in Europe.

Basically they were founded to gain more resources to take back to Europe.
