The notation "cc" (carbon copy) refers to making one or more copies of a letter in the typewriter by using sheets of carbon paper between the sheets of typing paper. This usually required setting the typing strike pressure higher to get clear copies through many sheets of paper. Carbon paper is very thin sheets of paper with a blue or black waxy coating on one side (other colors of carbon paper are also available).
In most cases the original (as it is the clearest and easiest to read) is mailed to the primary recipient, one carbon copy is placed in the file, and additional carbon copies are sent to various secondary recipients that are interested in the subject of the letter.
