Speed and the law (travelling)

If you are referring to the driving speed, then this depends on your country and state.

Speed limit in the United Kingdom

  • The maximum legal speed is 30 MPH in residential and built up areas and areas where no speed limit signs are posted.
  • The maximum speed on a single carriageway is 60 MPH for cars and 50 for larger vehicles, including cars towing a trailer, another vehicle, a caravan and so on.
  • The maximum speed on dual carriageways and motorways is 70 for cars and 60 for larger vehicles or cars with something in tow.
  • The limits apply to all parts of the United Kingdom, including overseas territories, regardless of county.

If you require speed information in a different country or state, please re-ask your question with this information.

Speed and science

If you meant in scientific terms, then the law for maximum speed is "nothing can travel faster than the speed of light in a vacuum".
But recently in 2015, scientists from the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom have found that the speed of light actually varies in a vacuum. You can read more about that by clicking here.

Just as in most places you can be fined for driving faster than the posted maximum speed limit, in some places you can be fined for driving slower than the posted minimum speed.
