1. It's easy to be deceived by appearances. Mathilde was deceived by the appearance of the fake necklace and, in turn, she deceived the highbrow people at the party into thinking she had wealth and status by an orchestrated pretense. Then when the necklace was changed from worthless to valuable no one knew. In a shallow arena appearance is more important than substance.

2. Find the good, the positive in your lot in life. Constantly coveting things (particularly superficial things) you don't and can't have will cause you to live an unhappy life. Trying to get them by devious means may result in more suffering -- one evening of happiness caused Mathilde a life of poverty. If can't have what you want, love what you have.
