It is not the caliber of the rifle...nor is it necessarily the brand...it is the one that will shoot the smallest groups at a given range, and that can be virtually any rifle and any caliber. The winners at Camp Perry used to be either .222 remington or .308 winchester, so it is not necessarily the most powerful, just the one that will make the smallest group at a given range. The 220 Swift is a 30-06 necked down to 22 caliber, and never was considered a super accurate cartridge, it just had 4,000 fps and a decent range...but the dimunitive .222 remingon was the 22 caliber centerfire making the smaller groups. It is any combination of rifle and ammunition that will shoot the smallest groups at a given range.

Some say the most accurate rifle is no longer the .220 Swift, a Remington 700 in 22-250 will out shoot and out distance the 220 Swift. Another more accurate rifle is a Ruger .204 made by CZ Zech, which will hit a quarter consitently shot after shot with the right scope at 200 yards.

On the other hand, the most accurate rifle has nothing to do with the cartridge, Nor the rifle maker. There are rifles built that shoot like match rifles in many cartridge choices.

Remington and other makers build one every once in a while that is a barn burner. If you think all CZ rifles in 22-250 or 204 will shoot quarter size groups at 200 yards, you will be disappointed.

I do accuracy service on rifles all the time and build rifles from factory actions and custom. The key to accuracy is the barrel first and from there the key parts of the rifle. Bedding and design along with the ammo you make for it. If you are thinking factory ammo will shoot at a match I challenge you to try it.

There are few factory guns that will shoot under a quarter at 200 yards, and if they do it is not "all" the time. Been building custom rifles for over 20 years and shooting competitve for much more than that.

The most accurate rifle is the one you tune up after finding a good barrel. If you are not going to load ammo for it, do not plan on a match rifle. The second one is right but the cheytac m200 sniper system is the most accurate because it hit a torso sized target at over a mile away it uses the .408 cheytac bullet and can penetrate through tank armor and still take out the enemy in the tank.

In general, the characteristics that make the most accurate pistol are the same ones that make the most accurate rifle: The action is locked firmly while the bullet is exiting the gun, a low recoil cartridge, and a long sight radius. This would suggest that a single shot .22 pistol with a 12" long barrel is the most accurate although this type may not meet expectations. Using a pistol is in reality a compromise between the desireable qualities of transportability and concealment against the relative inaccuracy and low power.

Typically, a revolver is more accurate than an automatic and a target pistol is more accurate than a service pistol. I, personally, have found that almost all guns are much more accurate than I can shoot them and the ones that I shoot best (more often make the hole where I wanted it to be) are the ones I can hold most securely and comfortably.

Another question that attempts to unveil the nonexistent magic weapon. As a former competitive handgun shooter, I know it is the marksman that is accurate not the weapon. You can buy a $1,000.00 target pistol, go to the range and be made a fool by a guy with a fix sighted S&W Model 10. The most accurate pistol is the one being utilized by the better marksman (not gender specific). As a rule it is usually a handgun with at least a 6 inch barrel and adjustable sights, from there it is up to the owner to find the right ammunition and zero the weapon. Modern handguns are far more accurate than over 90% of the people who own them, and there are too many finely made handguns to list without extensive research. As a point of interest, I was surprised to find that the S&W model 610, which is a revolver loaded with 10mm ammo is enjoying a certain amount of popularity among competitive shooters.

There most acccurate .22 pistol is the one that you can shoot the best! No one pistol will be the most accurate for every shooter. However, some pistols have a reputation for supurb accuracy.

One such pistol is the Hi-Standard. ( http://www.highstandard.com/ > click Target Pistols -22 Cal on the left)

A very expensive option is the Carl Walther custom: http://www.carlwalther.com/gsp.htm

Also, the Hammerli: http://www.larrysguns.com/Products/Hammerli-FP-60-free-pistol-22lr__pis_new_ham_FP-60.aspx

Personally, I can keep them all on a quarter at 50 feet with a 1960s High Standard Supermatic, so for me, that would probably be the most accurate pistol.

There is really no ''Most accurate rifle cartridge'' but more like ''Your most accurate rifle cartridge and rifle''. What I mean by that is if you are in a match competition you have to buy high grade bullets to get the best accuracy (test all the bullets out you considered using of the right caliber to find the most accurate of the bunch and stick with it). Also more importantly the rifle has to fit you comfortably. The drop at comb, the trigger pull, the rifle weight, the rifle length and balance, the recoil, etc. Same with a hunting rifle you just use hunting bullets and other misc. items in that category. May I suggest 30-06 Springfield or 300 Winchester Magnum?

Most accurate gun?

Too broad to answer. At what range? Rifle, rimfire, pistol, revolver? In general, a heavy barreled target rifle (most are custom builds) in one of the 6mm target calibers would be the most accurate to about 600 yards, but other rifles such as the .338 Lapua will be more accurate at 1500 yards.
