Domestic ferret habitatThe native habitat of ferrets before they were domesticated, like the European polecat ferrets was forested and semi-forested habitats near water sources.

Domestic ferrets are kept as pets or as working animals in human habitations usually in an indoor environment. Ferrets should always housed indoors in a temperature controlled environment. A ferret's habitat should include his own cage or a room of the house, as well as other designated areas of the house. Ferrets normally live with a cage for sleeping and protection, needing about 4 hours daily of supervised time outside of it's cage for playing and human interaction. The ferret needs to have a wire cage, preferably with three different levels. These separate levels consist of the meal area, the sleeping area, and the bathroom area. Ferrets are very neat animals and like to have a separate place for their bathrooms. It is important for the ferret's living area to have proper ventilation.

The size a ferret cage should be as the largest you can get, they cannot be kept in a cage continuously to avoid aggressive (biting) or obsessive behavoirA large, well designed cage for ferrets is a necessity. Some features to look for are solid floors and shelves / balconies (wire mesh is hard on the feet), and preferably solid ladders, too. Multi-level cages are good, but depending on the arrangement of the levels, falls may be possible. Use extra shelves or hammocks if necessary to make the cage safer .

A ferrets cage size at minimum should be at least 3 foot width X 2 foot depth X 2 foot height. Buy the largest that you can afford, ferrets are not caged animals, you only cage them for their protection and need time out of it's cage at least 4 hours daily. If you cannot provide that, don't get a ferret.

Ferrets natural instincts that they like to be in an enclosed area while sleeping and they need undisturbed sleep, about 16 - 19 hours a day, in a dark quiet area without artificial lighting.

Climate or temperature for a ferretFerrets tolerate cool climates well and they need to be kept in a climate or temperature controlled environment and are most comfortable at temperatures around 60 - 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ferrets have poorly developed sweat glands and cannot tolerate temperature above 80 - 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and humid weather can also be a problem.

In Europe and the U K, where the weather is mild, some ferrets are kept outside in courts (similar to dog kennels)

Can a ferret live outside?Ferrets are usually kept indoors in a temperature controlled environment, and can only be housed outdoors in an an area where it NEVER gets above 80Ëšf / 26Ëšc, and then only if they remain out of direct sunlight. Ferrets cannot handle high temperatures and humidity well at all and are extremely susceptible to heatstroke. Generally, when temperatures exceed 80Ëšf (26Ëšc), a ferret will begin to suffer the effects of overheating and possible heatstroke.

Ferrets that have become acclimated to gradually increasing temperatures over time will do better than a ferret that has lived its life in an air conditioned home and then is suddenly exposed to 80Ëš+ temperatures.

Winter - Ferrets cannot live outdoors in the cold. They can handle going outdoors in cold weather, unless it's really frigid (below freezing) or windy, wet weather. How long a ferret can stay outside depends, such as age, health and weather. A Young ferret will probably want to stay outside longer than an older ferret. Ferrets with health problems should only stay outside for a few minutes. A ferret can play outside for about 30 to 60 minutes. An older ferret, or one in poor health, should stay no more than 5 to 10 minutes outside at a time.

What about other ferrets? Do you mean Black footed ferrets or European polecat ferret - see related questions below for the answer

What is the ferrets most common prey?

I assume you mean in the wild. Well they usually eat prairie dogs but much of the shortgrass prairie habitat on which the ferrets depend has been plowed for crops. Prairie dogs, which are the ferrets' main food, have been reduced in number due to habitat loss and disease. Prairie dogs have been killed because they eat grass used by livestock or winter wheat grown as a crop.
