Manufactures rate their air guns and rifles FPS by using very lightweight pellets. But pellets come in different weights. The heavier the pellet the slower it flies, but it also flies straighter and has more knockdown power over a light weight pellet. Lightweight pellets have a tendency to drift off target in a light crosswind, where as heavy pellets fly straighter.

So if you see an add for 1000 FPS in reality, it is most likely around 925 to 950 FPS.

PreCharged Pneumatic air guns and rifles usually are the fastest when it come to FPS and can attain a speed of over 1350 FPS.

Interestingly, Olympic class air rifles that cost over $2000 only shoot at 500 FPS, but they are dead accurate. They know that slow and heavy is a good combination.
