Small arms refers to machine guns, pistols, carbines, and rifles. The most common rifles used by the Marines in WW2 was the M1 garand semiautomic 30-06 caliber rifle. In Korea, the same. In Vietnam, it was the M14 semiautomatic rifle in .308 caliber (7.62mm NATO); by the late 1960's in Vietnam, Marine riflemen transitioned to the US Army's new M16 assault rifle in caliber .223 (5.56mm NATO).
