The Alps
Hannibal crossed the Alps to enter northern Italy.
There were actually two regions that influenced the ancient Romans. One was Etruria, the land slightly to the north of Rome which was controlled by the Etruscans (among other parts of Italy) and the other was the area in the south of Italy which was settled by Greeks and called Magna Graecia.
This is self-explanatory. The north of Italy is obviously the northern part of country called Italy
