No one was swallowed by a "whale" in The Bible. This is a mistranslation and is probably one important reason why many people find the account ridiculous.

The account being referred to is presumably that involving the prophet Jonah, found in the Book of Jonah in the Old Testament, and referred to, briefly, in the New Testament:

According to the original account (in the Book of Jonah}, Jonah was swallowed by a gadol dag, a 'great fish' (Jonah 1:17), and in the Book of Matthew we are told that he was swallowed by a kitos, a 'great sea monster' (Matthew 12:40).
