Fort Dearborn was built near the mouth of the Chicago River in 1808, and was evacuated in 1812 and destroyed by the Indians of the area. The fort was rebuilt in 1818 and was closed in 1840. Markers in the pavement near Wacker and Michigan mark the fort's location. Here's a history of the fort: http://encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/477.html
