Not many people know about the city of Townsville but they should. Townsville, in the state of Queensland is on the North-Eastern Coast of Australia. It is Australia’s largest urban centre of the Sunshine Coast. Townsville hosts the Australian Festival of Chamber Music annually. For a ten day period during the month of July, international and Australian musicians gather and perform. Townsville also plays host for the Greek and Italian Festivals. Widely known because of it’s proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, Townsville has many attractions to entertain visitors. The Strand is a popular tourist attraction, luring visitors to it’s long tropical beach and garden strip. Magnetic Island which is a large island that houses a National Park, draws many visitors as well. There is no shortage of places to visit and things to see in the city of Townsville.
The Great Palm Island is located to the east of Halifax Bay. Townsville is located to the south and Ingham is located to the north.
Dugong feed on seagrass, which grows in meadows through sheltered coastal waters. The Great Barrier Reef has some of the Australia's best seagrass beds, covering as much as 13% of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park area.
Because the Great Barrier Reef extends for 2000 km up the Queensland coast, there are several cities close to the reef. A large city which is closest to where the reef comes in nearest the coast is Cairns. Townsville is a large city along the coast, but the reef is not as accessible and close to shore from there. The southern end of the Great Barrier Reef is around 75km northwest of the port city of Gladstone. Brisbane is the nearest capital city to the Reef, but it is about 530km from the southern end. Contrary to popular overseas opinion, Sydney is nowhere near the Great Barrier Reef, as it is 930 kilometres south of Brisbane.
