The myth that they're German comes from the fact that the great, great, great Grandfather of the current royal Princes was the German Prince Albert- prince consort to Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria's family had a mostly German origin, but she wasn't a German herself. The reality is though that most royal family's in Europe are and were related, so their country of origin was never that important. The current British royal family are as British as most British people today- many of whom had parents, grandparents or even great, great, great great grand parents who originated in other countries.
