Yes, key on, engine off, the fuel gauge should work.
Turn on the fuel valve by pointing the lever DOWN to the "normal" position. (Note: Sideways is the "off" position and UP is the "reserve" position.) Again, 6 o'clock is ON, 9 o'clock is OFF, 12 o'clock is RESERVE. A quick mnemonic to help remember which position is reserve: when you flip the lever UP to the 12 o'clock position, it's time to gas UP. "Lever UP = time to gas UP."
down is on middle is off up is reserve
If the button has popped up on the top of the switch that means that no power is going to the electric fuel pump ( pump is OFF )
Remove the fuel from the fuel tank, or add the appropriate amount of fuel stabilizer to the remaining fuel. Run the motorcycle with the petcock in the off position, if it has no off position, pinch or disconnect the main fuel line, then run the motor until it runs out of fuel. As far as coolant is concerned only drain if the temperature will drop below it's freezing point.
On most vehicles... FUEL PUMP SHUT-OFF SWITCH After a collision, if the engine cranks but does not start, the fuel pump shut-off switch may have been activated. The "Fuel Reset" indicator light will illuminate in the instrument cluster. The shut-off switch is a device intended to stop the electric fuel pump when your vehicle has been involved in a substantial jolt. 1. Turn the ignition to the OFF position. 2. Check the fuel system for leaks. 3. If no fuel leak is apparent, reset the fuel pump shut-off switch by pushing in the reset button. 4. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Pause for a few seconds and return the key to the OFF position. 5. Make a further check for leaks in the fuel system. Roadside emergencies The fuel pump shut-off switch is located in the passenger's foot well, behind the kick panel.

Makes no difference! Just ensure it is back in the on position not the reserve position after it is filled Remember on some bikes its not an off position either. Most new bikes use a vacuum system to turn on and off the fuel and the off is actually the on. Or always on , vacuum on and vacuum reserve on. == If you have a gravity-fed fuel system, you should turn it off whenever the engine is not in use or gasoline will invade your oil and cause problems.
the float is a component in a carbureator that meters the amount of fuel in the fuel bowl. when it fills with gas, it shuts off the fuel supply. regulating the level of fuel in the carb.
No, but in pre-beta stages it was half off. In beta it was 25% off.
