The NP205 Transfer case takes 2.5qts.
There has been quite a bit of discussion concerning the type of oil (gear vs ATF) from 1980 on. It's suspected that the change to Dexron I later on was for fuel economy.
They're virtually indestructible so any type of oil is good; unless it's mated to the NV4500. Use the same oil as the trans in case of a seal breach.

how do you check the oil for the front transfer case on a 1990 Toyota four runner
The oil capacity for a 311 case tractor is 5 quarts of oil. This is equal to about 4.7 liters.
The oil capacity is 14 quarts.
The recommended fluid type for the transfer case on a 1987 Nissan Pathfinder is a GL4 rated 80W90 gear oil. For part-time 4WD models, the capacity is 2.4 quarts.
The transfer case uses ATF.
I've ran a number of the New Process 205's in various applications. If it is going to be used solely for off-roading I recommend an inexpensive 80W90 as it has the right properties and is easy to find if you have swamped it. For daily driving I would run a 75W90 synthetic as it will provide a little better wear protection and will not degrade as fast. Just remember this is a gear driven transfer case, under higher load conditions, your oil will break down quicker.
