SAE 30 oil. This is a light engine oil which is generally meant for lighter air-cooled engines. Just look for "SAE 30". Beetles use about 2 1/2 quarts.

Should be 4 qts. without a filter and 5 qts. with a filter. Pontiacs take 6 quarts with a filter change. I know that the 67 400 engine I had held 6 quarts of oil, not including the additional quart contained in the oil filter. It was marked on the stick 6 quarts capacity in the pan
