Humus is what the organic material in soil is called. It's made by the breakdown of dead animal bodies and plant parts. It's dark brown, fresh smelling, and nutrient rich. Additionally, it's characterized by air and water pore spaces and by soil food web representation. Its pore spaces encourage proper aerating and moisturizing of the soil. The consequence is healthy access of plant roots and soil food web members to life sustaining nutrients.
