What is the origin of Islam?

Islam means to submit your will to the Will of Allah Almighty. Allah has created this world and all human beings and sincethe day the first human being was born and submitted his will to that of Allah, Islam has been there. It is not correct to say that Islam came about at the time of prophet muhammed (peace be upon him). Whosoever believes in One God and follows his commandments is in the circle of Islam, whether they chose to declare it or not. All the books before the Quran, were the Islamic guidance from Allah. They taught nothing but goodness, and so does the Quran, the last revelation of God to all human beings. So, Islam has its origins in the beginning of the creation of mankind, and all creatures.

Islamism (as opposed to Islam) is not a religion; it is a political ideology whose goal is to bring the religious tenets of Islam into the daily functioning of a government and its laws. Islamism is a modern movement whose roots began contemporaneously with the rise of Salafism in the late 1800s and early 1900s in Egypt. Most of the Islamist leadership is by nature quite religious. Some of the biggest leaders and founders of Islamism include Sayyed Qutb, Al-Maududi, and Hassan al-Banna.

Qutb has such a central role in developing the ideology that Islamism is sometimes called Qutbism. Qutb formulated his ideas during his study-abroad trip to Colorado. He was disgusted by the rampant materialism and hypersexuality that he witnessed in the West. As a result, he believed that Western Secularism would poison the Islamic World with the same result. He argued that Islam was what innoculated the Islamic World from this sort of materialism and it was therefore necessary to integrate Islamic Law into the governance of a modern political state. Al-Maududi came to the same conclusion in British-controlled Pakistan.

Islam was originated at around the 7th century in what is currently Saudi Arabia, when God sent his angel Gabriel to prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and gave him the Qur'an.

Islam was begun by the Prophet Muhammad, who is believed by Muslims to have received his first revelation from the angel Gabriel in 610 CE.
