The word 'la pétanque' is Provençal and it means placing your feet together, it is said that someone who was slightly disabled wanted to continue playing boules, but wasn't able to play 'la Longue' or 'le Jeu Provençal' - a kind of boules where you have make three strides or you can also run before Bowling the boule - invented it.
