Though some people have claimed that Sessom(s) was a Native American name, it is actually Welsh in origin, though many Sessom(s) family members have married Native Americans. The family first appears in the US in the state of Tennessee in the late 1700's. At one time in the 1800's, it was one of the most common family names in that state. However, as Western expansion occurred, much of the family moved West, many of them to the state of Texas. It is generally accepted that Michael Sessom was one of the first (if not THE first) of the Sessom(s) family to relocate to Texas. His descendants are now spread throughout the state and near states, such as Oklahoma and New Mexico.
