The first known chickens existed on Corinthian pottery of the 7th century BCE. They were also found on Greek pottery as well. In Ancient times, chickens were still somewhat rare and was considered to be a prestigious food. Chickens, dogs and pigs became the most common domestic animals across Asia and many other parts of the world. They were spread by overseas trade from Polynesians, and eventually made it to Easter Island where they became the only domesticated animal on the island. They were housed in stone chicken coops. From there is where they spread to Asia and Europe. Romans began breeding the chickens, creating several color variations and a dwarf species, which had no benefit except for visual pleasure. Cockfighting became a popular sport as the chicken population increased, and many books were written concerning the proper care for chickens. Today, chickens are all over the world. There are hundreds of different breeds of chickens and they provide food for people in every country.
