York is a city in northern England. New York is named after the English city. In western Sweden (about half way between Gothenburg and Norway's capital Oslo) is a small river Jore Älv leading to a bay now called Jörvik, there are Viking (and also much older) remains in the vicinity and Wikipedia says: "When the Vikings captured the city (of York) in 866 AD they renamed it Jórvík " so it could have been given it's name by Vikings from the locality in Sweden.
