God is mysterious and great, and so is Catholicism, but I think if you read with a critical ( and I guess, Atheist) eye you will find it more of a sardonic criticism of Christianity and Catholicism. Waugh really seems to be giving away more than he intended to. He claims the novel is more of a personal journey of faith yet religion is shown to be quite destructive. Sabastian is driven from his family by their piety. Charles acts as though Sabastian is beyond his help while loyalty to his friend and lover may well have saved him. Charles agnosticism is always week and of course, never actually Atheism, so Waughs perception of the novel as a journey of personal faith is accurate. Naturally, faith is a blinding anti-logic, so Charles is oblivious to his role in his lovers demise. Catholicism also prevents Julia from opting for happiness in marriage with Charles and it prevents Charles from making the slightest effort to save their relationship. In true religious form no religious argument is actually examined in the slightest. The journey of faith is mystical, Charles' unanswered questions, combined with powerful emotions and strife, mix well, bake till middle age, and voila! A frech tasty Christian, ripe for Jesus to eat...
