Mexico City (19° 25' 57.85'' N, 99° 07' 59.71'' W) is located within a valley that has a subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cwb), due to its tropical location and high elevation of 2,240 meters (7,349 feet) above sea level. The lower region of the valley is composed mainly of grassland that receives less rainfall than the upper regions of the south; the upper southern region is a mountainous region of pine and oak trees known as the range of Ajusco.
Mexico City is in an area called the Valley of Mexico. Much of central Mexico is a plateau, Mexico City is on the plateau but much of the surrounding terrain is even higher. The weather in Mexico City is excellent with a couple of months when it rains a bit in the morning and then is usually sunny the rest of the day. But because of the valley situation the air tends to hang above the city and the air is heavy with fumes and toxins from gas and diesel fuel. Mexico City is huge with a population well over twenty million. To the north the topography becomes desert. To the south it becomes sub-tropical, lush and abounding with exotic plants and animals.
