The piano is a great instrument for many reasons. There are many ways to play it. The piano was used mainly to express someone's feelings or to tell a story. It was a main instrument a long time ago found in many homes. This instrument was and is often used for music to dance to and in old and present movies. The piano was created in the 18th century, in Padua, Italy. What a lot of people don't know is that the piano is actually a string instrument. It is important to realize why it was invented and why it is such an important factor to creating music.

The CreationBartolomeo Cristofori was the inventor of the piano. He lived from 1655 to 1731 and must have created it during that time although we don't know the specific year. It was a little different back then, you probably could guess that. One of the things that was different was its name. Now it is just called the piano, but when it was first invented it was called the pianoforte. In Italian piano means soft and forte means loud. It was called that because it can be soft or loud depending on how hard you play the keys. The range of the piano, in Italian, is from pianissimo to fortissimo or very soft to very loud. There are 88 keys in all, 52 are white keys and 36 of them are black keys.

Musical Periods Many famous composers you may know played in the classical period but there are 6 musical periods. The first period was called the renaissance (1450 to 1600). The next period is Baroque music which describes a style of European Classical Music lasting from 1600 to 1750. The next period was the Classical Period in Western music between about 1750 and 1830. Then the Romantic Period came from about 1800 to 1910. If you noticed, the classical and romantic period overlapped each other. The next two periods are different because they come hand in hand with each other. The Contemporary Period comes first and then the Modern Period. Some people think there are only five periods but the Modern period is present music. The Contemporary Period was from 1900 to present (2010). The modern period started around 1990 to present.

Composers There are many composers but only some are very famous. Haydn, Clementi, Mozart, Beethoven and Bach are a few of these composers. An average person knows at least one of these names. Composers back then played on a harpsichord. It had no pedals and looked remotely different. Since it had no pedals composers did something that people today don't have to do. There are 3 pedals on grand pianos and the right one is the most used one. It is called the sustain pedal because it holds notes that you play. On the harpsichord you have to do it yourself. Composers would compose music back then without knowing that we would invent the pedal. Bach composed his music with a harpsichord so there is no pedal signs on his pieces. Beethoven was deaf yet still created beautiful excellent music. How did he do it? Losing one sense can amplify the others. Maybe hearing is a very important sense for playing the piano but it didn't stop him. Many piano composers working very hard and loved the piano. That is what made them great, and they didn't stop when there was a problem, they never gave up.
