The police hierarchy, simply put, is the chain of command (looks almost like a pyramid) for law enforcement. At the bottom is uniformed patrol officers, then sgt. then lieutenant, follwed by captain, then Dept Chief and then chief. The higher up the person is the more responsibilities and authority they have and the more they make.
Virtually all law enforcement agencies - particularly the uniformed ones - are established along a quasi-military or para-military type of pattern, with a Chief or Commissioner at the top and with several intervening ranks of upper level managers (Dep. Chiefs, Majors, Captains, Lieutenants, etc) down to the lower levels of command (Sergeants, Corporals, PFC's, etc). They are usually established more-or-less along a "span of control" type management system.
hierarchy is structure and flow of authority.
