A differential amplifier will amplify the difference between 2 signals. This is useful in control systems, where one signal can represent what is actually happening (could be a position or speed, for example). The other signal can represent what is desired. A differential amplifier could be used in a cruise control on a car. When you set the cruise control, a voltage level can represent the speed that the car was traveling when set. If the car starts going up a hill and slows down, the voltage difference would be amplified, and the output of the differential amplifier can be sent to an actuator, which moves a lever to increase the rate of fuel going to the engine. When you get back to the desired speed, the difference is zero, and the actuator stops moving. If your speed increases too much, then it would have a negative voltage, so the actuator would move the other way, decreasing the rate of fuel to the engine.

Pulse Position modulation is digital or not?
Pulse position modulation can be analog or digital, it depends on the signal and/or the modulator used to obtain the modulation. If an analog signal is applied at the input of the modulator, the position of the pulse can assume an infinity of different timing states (the signal vary continuously) and hence an analog modulation is realised in PPM. On the contrary if the signal is digitized previously in a series of discrete states, the pulse at the output will have discrete timing interval (not continuosly). Then a digital modulation is obtained. If the signal is analog, but the modulator is digital, we will have again a number of finite state in output timing, and the PPM will be digital. To be noted that, if the number of steps in the digital modulator, is higher then the dinamic range required, the performance of the digital and analog PPM will be exactly the same. Cecking the front of the pulse of PPM with a digital oscilloscope capable of jitter measurament, we will see immediately if the position of the pulses will be continuosly variable or a number of discrete steps will be presented. We can then consider analog and digital PPM physically different.

Differentiate fixed bias self bias signal bias?
Base-Current Bias (Fixed Bias) The first biasing method, called BASE CURRENT BIAS or sometimes FIXED BIAS, was used in figure 2-12. As you recall, it consisted basically of a resistor (RB) connected between the collector supply voltage and the base. Unfortunately, this simple arrangement is quite thermally unstable. If the temperature of the transistor rises for any reason (due to a rise in ambient temperature or due to current flow through it), collector current will increase. This increase in current also causes the dc operating point, sometimes called the quiescent or static point, to move away from its desired position (level). This reaction to temperature is undesirable because it affects amplifier gain (the number of times of amplification) and could result in distortion, as you will see later in this discussion. Self-Bias A better method of biasing is obtained by inserting the bias resistor directly between the base and collector, as shown in figure 2-13. By tying the collector to the base in this manner, feedback voltage can be fed from the collector to the base to develop forward bias. This arrangement is called SELF-BIAS. Now, if an increase of temperature causes an increase in collector current, the collector voltage (VC) will fall because of the increase of voltage produced across the load resistor (RL). This drop in VC will be fed back to the base and will result in a decrease in the base current. The decrease in base current will oppose the original increase in collector current and tend to stabilize it. The exact opposite effect is produced when the collector current decreases.
