It brings data from several source areas together and can do things like total them or other operations. If you have two sets of data, you can combine them into one single set of data without doing it through a formula. It can be done based on position, so you could have two lists of values and add them together. You can also combine them by category. So you could have several values under different headings with more than one set, so that there are lots of values for each. So say you have a number of years with a total for each month in each year. You could consolidate the data so that all the individual January totals are added together and given as one single total.

Consolidation brings data together and combines it into single totals. A typical example would be a company having different sales offices and wanting to get a combined total of all of their sales. Another example would be taking data from parts of the year, like months or quarters and combining those into one total. The result values in the cells are not formulas. The calculations are done during the process and the resulting totals are put into the cells. Normally when consolidating, the different sets of figures you have should correspond, so you would have two sets with the same amount and layout. Normally you would be summing the values, but you can do other kinds of calculations. You can also do consolidations in other ways, like using categories, which are determined by having corresponding headings. You do not have to have the exact same headings in both, but normally there would be some common headings.

Consolidate brings data together using a summary function such as SUM or AVERAGE etc. You can consolidate by position, when the data is arranged in the same way with the same labels. You can consolidate by category, which uses the labels. Different ranges can be specified and then in a free space the values can be put in.
