I do it this way: I warm the engine up, shut it off, and go and pull the drain plug out of the oil pan with a drain pan under it. I remove the oil fill cap from the top of the engine. Whiel the engine is warm I just loosen the oil filter, I do not remove it until most of the oil has drained from the oil pan, then i remove the oil filter and put that upside down to drain into the pan. Look at the old oil filter and make sure the rubber gasket ring came off with the old filter. Take a rag and wipe the surface area where the oil filter seats against the block. Put clean fresh oil on the new filter around the rubber ring and thread it onto the threads and spin it up until it makes contact and then 3/4s of a turn. After inspecting and cleaning the drain plug, put the drain plug back in the oil pan threading it in by hand as far as you can to avoid crossthreading it,tighten it but not overtighten, then wipe everything down so you can tell if you have a leak. Go up and add the necessary quarts of oil by pouring them into the oil filler tube. Make sure you know how many quarts your engine takes. DO NOT OVERFILL Start your engine and let it run for a minute or two to fill the oil filter and get oil throughout the engine and then shut it off. I let it sit for about 5 minutes while I clean up and then recheck the level using the dipstick. Make sure you are on a level surface to get an accurate reading. Remember it's easier to add a little then to take it out. Take your used oil and filter to a recylcing place and know you did the job yourself, did it right and saved a few bucks in the process.
