Usually by their first name, and sign off with your first name.

In an informal letter to a close personal friend you may use: Dear Jane, Dear Janey, or Hi Jane,

In an informal letter to someone you know well enough to call by their given name, but not necessarily well enough to use a diminutive or nickname, use: Dear Jane, In an informal letter to someone you know only casually use Dear Ms. Doe or Dear Jane Doe, In most cases letters should be signed with your full name, think about it, how many people out there have the same given name as you... if there is any chance for doubt, use your full name.

Different ways to address a person:

• If it's a friend then call them by their first name and if sending them mail put on the envelope (example) Mr. John Doe or Mr. & Mrs. John Doe.
• If the person is a clergyman then you would put Pastor John Doe; (if a the Minister has a doctorate) then it's Dr. John Doe.
• If you addressing a nun it would be 'Sister Jane Doe.'
• If it's a male doctor and his wife: Dr. & Mrs. John Doe.
• If it's a female doctor only then address them as : Mr. John Doe and Dr. John Doe.
• President would be 'President Obama' as an example or the President of Another Country.
• In Canada it would be Premier ___________.
• In the UK 'Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
