* If you are not an individual that words come easy too then find a card with a lovely verse in it that says it for you. You could sign it anyway you would like. You could put (depending of what you are thanking the person for) 'Thank you for the lovely gift and I was so pleased to see you at my birthday party. It meant a great deal to me.' If you know the person well and are comfortable with that then sign it 'Love' and if not then just sign your name.

* You can buy a card with a nice verse inside that convey how thankful you are. Before you sign it you can write, 'I had such a wonderful time at our luncheon and the lovely ______ you gave me and it was greatly appreciated.' Then sign your name.

Handwritten, in a timely fashion , and mention the gift specifically so the giver knows they are not getting some generic thanks.

Do you need to write a thankyou for a gift that was given to someone else than given to you by that person?

I would think that if a gift was not originally intended for you, and you are certain it was first given to someone else, you do not need to write a special note. You should personally thank whoever gave it to you, however, since that person meant well and thought you would enjoy the gift more than they did. But if you are sure you were not the original recipient, I do not believe a thank-you note is expected.
