When you start your car on a very cold day, your oil is quite thick and can't flow thru your filter. Your bypass valve opens up and lets the oil pass by until the engine has warmed up and the oil has thinned out a little. Also, if you haven't changed your oil filter for a long time and it is now completely plugged up, the bypass valve open up to let the oil go thru.

How does oil filter contains a check valve works?

The bypass valve in an oil filter allows the oil to bypass the filter if the filter becomes clogged. Some filters also have an anti-drain back valve when the filter is mounted in such a way as the oil could drain out of the filter. This valve prevents the oil from running back into the engine out of the filter which would cause the engine to be started with an empty filter every time.

Oil is going through cooler but stopping at the filter?

The filter, or filter bypass valve is clogged, replace the filter and then the valve; if the filter replacement does not fix it. (NOTE: Some cars have the bypass filters in the oil filter, others do not)

What happens if oil filter gets plugged up?

The bypass valve will open and the dirty oil will bypass the filter and go throughout the engine. This will never happen if you change your oil every 5,000 miles and also change the filter.

Is it true that a pressure relief valve located inside the oil filter is designed to limit engine oil pressure?

No. The pressure relief valve is part of the pump. The oil filter has a built in bypass valve. It is for if the filter media gets plugged the valve opens and oil still circulates.

If your oil filter is not functioning and no oil is going to the engine could this cause the engine to die?

even if the oil filter is clogged the oil will still go to the engine via the bypass valve but it is not filtered but if no oil goes to the engine it will soon seize up and be destroyed
