They were originally bred to pull carts, carry heavy bags, and as a mean of transportation. Now they are not only used for the above purposes but also the protection of livestock animals such as sheep and goats. Their high pitched bray will scare off predators, they are known to chase wolves, coyotes and even dogs out of the area of the herd.
Donkeys are usefull for many things, they have a great protective instinct. When they hear wolves, coyotes or dogs that may cause harm, they will bray which will chase away the predator. If the predator tries to attack the flock, the donkey will chase the animal away or even kill it.
Donkeys are also strong, they are great for transportation or carrying large heavy bags. Greece and Africa countries are known for using donkeys for this reason, while Canada and US is known for using them for protection of sheep or goats.
There is no point in keeping a donkey unless your attached to it as a pet, or you had him plow and you now got a machine to do it, so you kept him BECAUSE you couldn't sell the donkey.
