What is the purpose of operating system software?
An Operating System (or OS) is what your entire Interface is. It
is a layer of code or a "bridge" between the hardware and the user,
along with the programs a user decides to use. The OS helps you
navigate to the internet, programs, etc. Without an OS you are left
with a blank computer screen. The OS manages the memory, controls
the data which goes to and from the peripheral devices, and
provides an infrastructure that programs can use. Operating systems
provide common code that all the applications can use. Otherwise,
all the programs would be much larger since the same code would
have to be duplicated over and over for each one.
