If the term Indian means Native American and the mother has a recognized Indian number it would be advantageous to the child to designate him/her as a Native American since the child would be 50% Native American. This would set the stage for benefits to the child as well as some number of subsequent direct descendants. There is a mixed race designation available in some states however clarity in this instance might be well advised.

If Indian refers to someone from India then the child could be listed in any of several ways depending on the state of birth.
