Best Answer

The American Soldiers were involved in D-day because they were part of the Allied forces. The United Kingdom had fought the Germans prior to 1941 and the Allies needed more men and equipment to attack the Germans directly. The US provided men and ships and planes that was needed to fight the war. General Eisenhower was placed in overall command of all the Allied Forces that would be involved in the D-Day invasion. So the US had a primary role in the invasion and not just a support role. Custermen

D-day, which was a the code name given for one of the most ambitious yet risky amphibious assaults in World War II, let alone military history in general, occurred on June 6, 1944. Hundreds of thousands of men were involved with the operation from various countries, including the United States, Great Britain, and Canada. Thousands of aircraft, landing craft of differing sizes, warships (battleships, cruisers, destroyers, etc.) were involved in this monumental undertaking. Various beachheads were established in different sectors, or zones, whereby the forces would land. These landing areas had the call signs known as Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The commanding general of the European Theater of Operations (ETO) was an American himself, Dwight David Eisenhower, a five star general commanding all troops. The United States had enormous persuasion in military affairs, simply stated it could provide the necessary forces and munitions or weaponry for such an event. The United States, at this time in history and through the present, has had no rival with regard to capital (or money) to finance a war. Also, Ike (or General Eisenhower) was pressured by the American public to provide an end to the war which was quick with an emphasis on minimal losses. Indeed, it can most likely be safely said that the bulk of all forces in the Allied forces desired to be done with the war and home by Christmas of 1944, and D-Day (or Operation Overlord) would speed the event of Germany's surrender if successful. Of course, success was achieved; however, Germany would not surrender unconditionally until May of 1945. This was a very brief glimpse of an introduction as to why the U.S. had joined in the operation, but there are a multitude of excellent reading materials that provide a wealth of information into the subject. For an informative account that reads like a novel, you may try D-Day written by Stephen Ambrose.

The American landings in the Normandy region of France (on Omaha and Utah beaches) were part of the larger Operation Overlord, an Allied amphibious and airborne invasion of western France in order to begin the liberation of Europe from the German occupation and to open up the "Second Front" to drawn German forces off of the Russians on the Eastern Front.

The invasion force also included British, Canadian, Free French, Polish, and Australian troops landing on various beaches in Normandy, as well as British, American, and Free French paratroopers landing inland to hinder German counter-attacks against the beach.

D-Day was the landing of allied forces on the beaches of France to fight the Germans in WW2. Once the beachhead was established they were able to move in land to take the rest of France and Europe from Germany.
