If more food and different kinds of foods (especially surplus foods) are traded between different places, more people will eat, their diets will have more variety, and each person will eat more, and more people will stay alive. Therefore, more people will reproduce. There will be enough food for the young, so they will live as well.

If beds, shoes, clothes, and even luxuries are traded, people will live more comfortably. They will live longer (especially if they have clothes to keep them warm). Therefore, more people will reproduce and live, and their kids will live longer.

The population will grow larger. There was a great population increase in Europe after the New World was discovered.

This concept applies more to less developed societies than our own, but it does apply to us as well.
