Clearly, the most important medieval European religion was Christianity. After the Great Schism of 1054, the Roman Catholic Church prevailed in the West, and the Eastern Orthodox Church was dominant in the East. There were other Christian Churches, both orthodox and heterodox, throughout the middle ages, and there were other religions, most notably Judaism, Islam, and paganism, depending on time and place.
