Initially he was fighting a Calvinist Caucus who had gained supremacy within Parliament. Later the army fell under the spell of one of its leading officers, Gen'l Cromwell who later disbanded the Parliament and became leader of a Junta of Army Officers! Then dictator!

∙ 12y agoCharles was King of England in an age when society was leaving the medieval times and moving in to the modern age! The trouble was the machinery used to navigate the change, or effect it was worn out and rather more suited to the medieval world than the new one!
Charles attempted to use his position as King and God's Vice Regent, [social branch,] to lessen the problems in face of growing needs. To do this he used not so much illegal methods as unpopular ones . This caused his opposition to accuse him of bringing in unconstitutional methods. Trying to turn his Government in to a totalitarian one, by cutting out wars and unnecessary expenditure for eleven years .He and England lived quite well. Then he fell out with his scottish subjects and had a war, to pay for which he appealed to his English Parliament! A fateful move , he lost the war and his political ambitions dissolved, he apologised for any anti parliamentary behavior and took his opponents in to his council thus answering all their problems. Or so he thought!
The problems now switched from Social and civic ones to religion. Charles was the Head of the Anglican,'Catholic,' Church, an institution some two thousand years old! Parliament, in the control of a Calvinist majority wanted to take away the leadership of The Church and give the buildings and wealth in to the hands of the Presbyterians.The Church men, who were passive, surprisingly enough complained by a petition, for the laws to be put in to commission for protection of the ancient church. Parliament responded firmly, refusing the petition ,banning it, putting the MP' who introduced it in to gaol and promising like action in case of any other!. The King who had thought himself on an even keel when asked for action by the Anglicans was perplexed, he had no army , [1000 men split between , London and Portsmouth.] REFUSED TO SIGN A BILL ABOLISHING THE C. OF E, [roughly] and from then on found himself hounded out of his capital, with no money and his wife in danger as well as his religion. The War that was fought within a few months was a Civil War, but there were ,at that time,no social implications, it was parliament trying to interfere in the Anglican Church's life. Without consulting the people themselves.
Charles was a good though rather naieve man, who was out of his depth, with a scheming parliament controlled by men far sharper intellect. He was out classed as a politician and was more of a lamb going to the slaughter!
