Red touches yellow - kill a fellow, red touches black - venom lack.
it is important to mention that this saying only works for telling those two species apart. it doesn't work when distinguishing between snakes outside of North America

∙ 13y agoThe BEST way - would be to photograph it, and compare the photograph with pictures in an encyclopaedia.
Many 'harmless' snakes mimic venomous species - Milk Snakes (harmless) have coloured bands similar to Coral Snakes (venomous)
If in doubt LEAVE it alone !
