All dogs belong to the genus, species, and subspecies "Canis lupus familiaris." In other words, dogs are a subspecies of wolf ("Canis lupus"). Scientifically or in terms of taxonomy, breeds of dogs are not separate subspecies at all since all breeds have the potential of producing offspring with any other breed (and with wolves, actually). Thus, there is no formal scientific nomenclature for any breed, such as Labrador retriever.
In part, this is because breeds are not only genetic but also (human) cultural.
In the United States, purebred Labrador retrievers can come in three colors called black, chocolate, and yellow. (There is no such thing as a "silver" or "golden" Labrador.) Labradors are classified as Sporting Dogs by the AKC (called Gundogs in the U.K.). They originated in the 1700s in what is now Newfoundland from a breed that is now exctinct called the St. Johns Dog or Water Dog. Labradors are closely related to Newfoundlands (Newfies).

sort of. a golden retriever only comes in gold-hints the name, but there is a type of retriever that comes in a redish brown color.
No golden retriever is a common noun, a word for a breed of dog. A proper noun is the name of a person, place, or thing. It is a proper noun when used as a name such as The Golden Retriever Breeders' Association. The dog's name is a proper noun. A dog breed using a proper noun such a German shepherd includes a proper noun.
This is up to you, but there are a few rules about naming a Golden Retriever: 1. Choose a 2 syllable name. The name "Alexandra" is not a good example because it is too long. You can call her Alex for short. 2. Choose a name that is easy to call out. "Max" is a good example. 3. Don't choose a name that sounds like one of the commands. For example "Paul" sounds like "Paw". 4. Choose a name that suits your Golden Retriever's appearence. For example, "Blackie" is a good name for a black dog, but not a Golden Retriever. A better name for a Golden Retriever is "Amber". 5. Choose a name that suits your Golden Retriever's temperament. For example, an active female Golden Retriever can be called Electra.
