At the moment it is the M16, however, the US Military is currently transitioning to the M4. The term "M16" is a US military classification, the weapon is actually known as the Armalite. First used in the Vietnam War the M16 has seen several major upgrades, but is still much the same weapon as it was 40 years ago

∙ 12y agoMainly the standard weapon for the US Army is the M4, or the M16. the only difference is the M16 has a slightly longer range. But when fighting is an area where the battlefield is no bigger then a football field, and the enemy knows where you are. You don't need to be a Sniper (unless that's your job). There are quite a number of M16s and M4s in service with the army. But more soldiers are starting to use the M4, due to the fact it is smaller and easier to handle in tight spaces.

∙ 9y agoThe M4 carbine, M16 rifle, and variants based on those receivers (such as the Air Force GUU-5P) are standard service rifles. For snipers, the M24, M40, M21, and M110 are standard.
