Sunnah means "path," or "tradition." The adjective "sunni" describes the majority sect of Islam, the others being "shiah," meaning "partisans" (of Ali) and "sufi," which refers to the white wool the believers wear.

The Sunnah is the term used to mean everything that Prophet Muhammad said, did or approved or disapproved of. It is the way by which Muslims more fully and correctly understand what God's guidance to them is.

The word "sunnah" means a "way" of behavior. In this sense, everyone has a "sunnah". God's "sunnah" with Mankind is that He forgives those who repent and believe in His Oneness, and He punishes those who reject belief and do not repent from sin.
