The tallest mountain is mount everest, measuring up to 29,035 feet (8,850 meters) above sea level.

Although Everest is the tallest above sea level the tallest from the base to the summit is Mauna Kea at 32,696 ft (9,966 m). There is some debate because it is only 13,796 ft (4,205 m ) from sea level and also the tallest base to summit on dry land would be Mount McKinlay (Denali).
Note:

There is a distinction between the 'tallest' versus the 'highest' mountain. The tallest mountain is measured from base to summit. The highest mountain is a measurement of the highest point.

If you define the center point of the earth as a reference, using sea level, Mount Everest is technically the highest.

Tallest mountain from sea level (highest):

Mount Everest (also known as Qomolangma, or Chomolungma) in Asia's Himalayas is the world's highest mountain peak. When measured from sea level to its summit, it's 29,029 feet (8,848 meters) tall.

Mount Everest is called the world's highest mountain because it has the highest elevation above sea level.

The summit has been reached more than 4000 times by climbers, who pay a fee ($25000 USD) for a climbing permit.

Tallest mountain from the ocean floor (tallest):

Mauna Kea (in Hawaii) is the world's tallest mountain peak. When measured from the ocean floor to its summit, it's 33,476 feet tall (10,204 meters), but only its top 13,803 feet (4,207 meters) extend above sea level. Mauna Kea is also the world's tallest volcano.

Other considerations:

Measuring from the mountain's base to peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount McKinley (Denali), and Nanga Parbat, are all worth considering as the tallest in this category. It isn't possible to isolate one of these as the tallest because of the difficulty in establishing just where one considers the base of the mountain to be.

Hawaii's Mauna Loa volcano is the world's largest mountain in cubic content with an estimated volume of 9,600 cubic miles (40,000 cubic kilometers). Mauna Loa is 13,681 feet (4,170 meters) high.

While Mt. Everest is the world's tallest mountain above sea level, Mauna Loa is still quite spectacular.

The distinction between world's tallest mountain range and world's highest mountain range is that the tallest mountains include those that are completely or partially submerged in water. When considering the height of the highestmountains, only the amount above sea level is considered.

Mauna Kea is the world's tallest mountain. It is located in Hawaii, USA. It is mostly submerged in the Pacific Ocean and rises more than 10,000 m (32,808 ft) from the ocean floor.
Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world at 8,848m or 29,029ft
There are actually two answers to this question. The base of many mountains in the world are below sea level. Therefore the tallest mountain in the world is not the highest since a large part of the mountain is below sea level.

i would have to disagree with you on this. just because it is below sea level doesn't differ it height. a mountain can be twice as tall as Everest, and be underwater. just because it is underwater doesn't mean that it is shorter.

That being said, the highest mountain above sea level is Mount Everest, 8,848 meters (29,029 ft.) from the height above sea level to its peak.

The tallest mountain in the world is Mauna Kea, located in Hawaii. Mauna Kea's base is on the Pacific Ocean floor, with several thousand feet of the mountain being below sea level. Although it is the tallest mountain in the world, it's measurement from above sea level to peak is 4,207 meters (13,803 ft.).
Mount Everest is by far the biggest
Everest in the Himalayas.
Mount Everest

The highest mountain peak in the world is Mt. Everest which is in the range of Himalaya.
Mount Everest, as measured from sea level. But due to the equatorial bulge, several volcanoes are further from the centre of the Earth. Such as Kilimanjaro, Chimborazo etc.

What are facts about the mountains?

Mountains are large landforms that rise prominently above their surroundings, typically with steep slopes and high peaks.
